Referenced Standards

Harmonised British and European standard specifying requirements for Wall Ties and Tension Straps and their respective methods of testing. Applicable to UK and Ireland.

Key requirements:
• Wall Tie compressive and tensile loads determined by BS EN 846-5:2012 and BS EN 846-6:2012
• Shear load determined by BS EN 846-7:2012
• Tension Strap tensile loads determined by BS EN 846-4:2002

All Thor Helical remedial and new-build wall ties are independently tested within Lucideon (Notified Body 1289) to conform to this standard.

Key Definitions

Ultimate Load Capacity
The maximum load that each component can withstand before failure.
Manufacturer's Declared Load Capacity
The maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer that a component can safely support during normal use. Declared for safe usage guidance and to prevent overloading during design stage.
Design Load Capacity
The component load capacity that should be considered when designing structures. Determined by applying a partial factor for a material property (γM) of 3 to Ultimate or Manufacturer's Declared Load Capacity.
Type 1 Wall Tie
Highest performance class per PD 6697:2019. Suitable for exposed locations and high-load applications.
Type 2 Wall Tie
Standard performance class for most domestic and commercial applications.
Type 3 Wall Tie
For use in weaker substrates such as AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) blockwork.
Type 4 Wall Tie
Resin-fixed ties, suitable for general domestic use up to 150mm cavity, not where fire performance >30 minutes is required.
Type 6 Wall Tie
Timber frame tie classification per BS 5268-6.1:1996.
Bed Joint
The horizontal mortar joint between courses of masonry into which helical bars are installed for crack stitching and masonry beam formation.
