Lateral Restraint for Bulging / Leaning Walls

Prevent movement of masonry by securing bowing or leaning brickwork to a stable floor diaphragm… a proven, minimally invasive solution.

The Problem

Bowing or leaning masonry poses a serious structural risk. This can result from inadequate restraint, loss of connection to internal floors, tie failure, or movement over time. The wall must be secured to prevent further movement and potential collapse.

Best Practice: Fixing bulging walls to a stable floor diaphragm should only be considered where the bulge does not exceed approximately one third of the wall's thickness.

Two Product Types

Lateral Restraint Ties

For joists parallel to the bulging wall. Installed through a Ø16mm clearance hole in masonry, drilled into multiple floor joists.

Joist-End Restraint Ties

For joists reinforcement perpendicular to the bulging wall. Ø6mm pilot hole through masonry, hammered into joist ends.

  • • Lengths: 255–405mm (25mm increments)
  • • Grade 304 SS (316 on request)
  • • Self-tapping — no splitting of timber

Thor Helical Masonry Connection Sleeves combine lateral restraint ties with bed joint reinforcement to provide structural upgrade to masonry. The Connection Sleeve features an internal thread that screws onto the Lateral Restraint Tie.
